VUMA KEEPS IT GREEN!

recycle

Reuse, Recycle, Re-invent!

At Vuma we have always believed in Green, from using organically grown raw materials wherever possible to keeping our bags environmentally friendly. Our 22.5Kg laminated BOPP bags are made from recyclable polypropylene so they can be reconstituted but the attractive bags are just too nice to simply send to the recycling plant!

We were delighted to see this innovative use of our polyprop bags at Roy Magner's yard at Randjiesfontein, they are, in our opinion, the nicest grooming kit bags around!

FEEDING THE LIFE STAGES AT STUD

Stud Horse Mare and Foal

Feeding the Stud Horse...
(Photo : Vuma Horse Feeds)

"The Age Old Stud Horse Debate"

Much noise is suddenly being made about feeding the stud horse and particularly how much to feed mares and foals, to provide a creep feed or not, levels of protein, amounts of roughage and the correct balance of minerals and vitamins.

None of this is new and it is an age old debate but at Vuma we still believe in our original views and formulations. Champion Breeders for the past seven seasons can't be that wrong and Summerhill stats will show you that horses raised on the foundations of Vuma run for longer on average and more often than others. Whichever way you look at it there is no disputing the value of a superior stud feed, formulated to ensure correct growth and lay down strong bone from the very beginning, even while still in utero. While correct limb conformation, good bone and size are a vital pay-off at the sales, even more telling are the results at the race track!

Nutrition is essential in maximizing bone density. Skeletal growth is rapid during the first 12 months and it is at this time that bone, cartilage and tendon are being deposited and strengthened. The benefits of good levels of vitamin A, vitamin E and biotin are irrefutable in stud rations, and there is evidence to suggest that vitamin C is important in the development of healthy collagen and is essential to the production of connective tissues (ligaments, tendons, cartilage).

Skeletal growth occurs faster than weight gain. At 6 months of age bone mineralization is 68% complete. Dietary mineral supplementation along with careful management and training programs will result in improved bone density and in turn, improved skeletal durability. Young horses will stay training longer without the problems that bone injuries can cause.

As consultant nutritionist to Vuma, Debbie Odell, explained back in 2009, a steady growth rate in foals is the optimal goal.

The regular use of the Kentucky Growth Chart to measure your foals growth, is important to gauge growth rates.

JET STREAM TURBULENCE

"From Dead Heats to Final Touchdowns"

This past week has been somewhat turbulent as the Highveld Autumn season came to a close with Champions Day at Turffontein and the Emperors Palace Bloodstock SA National Yearling Sale.

The sale ended slightly lower than last year, although mostly positive (and certainly the figures are more realistic since the TBA has taken the bold step of excluding vendor buy-backs in the overall sales figures.)

However, around the sales complex not all vendors were equally happy and the sale was a tough one for many of the smaller breeders. Champion Breeders and Vuma founders, Summerhill Stud ended as the 5th leading vendor with their yearlings selling for an average price of R323,077.

Saturday's Champions Day provided many thrills and a few disappointments. Mary Slack's, Wilgerbosdrift Stud had a phenomenal day, winning 4 of the 9 graded races with some of their exceptional fillies. Apart from their breeding, the performance of all four horses, trained by Mike de Kock, makes them very exciting broodmare prospects for the stud, once their racing careers are over. They will certainly be ones to watch in the future!

The Grade 1 SA Derby proved a nail biter, with Sean Tarry and Chris van Niekerk's Pomodoro just getting up to dead-heat with Alec Laird's Royal Bencher. Pomodoro was also bred by Chris and he is living up to his name and proving himself to be a very golden apple!

Our favourite Champ, JJ The Jet Plane, ran in the Computaform Sprint, after winning it in 2008 and going on to travel the world and back, lighting up the tracks wherever he went. Seemingly, he has shown that at the age of 7, with a merit rating of 122 and earnings of over R12 million, that he has nothing left to prove and would prefer to expend his energy as he chooses. The owners have decided to retire him and he will be living in the rolling green hills of Mooi River with Marc and Nicola Coppez of Balmoral Stud.

To Hennie, Coenie, Thea, Lucky, Natalie and the whole T&L Racing Stables team, it is the end of an unbelievable ride. No Jet Plane ever built could provide the thrills and once in a lifetime experiences that JJ has.

He has been a true champion and the Vuma team salutes you all - we have loved playing a part in his career and he has made us all truly proud!

2012 NATIONAL YEARLING SALE AND CHAMPION'S DAY

TBA Sales Complex, Gosforth Park, Germiston, South Africa

"If you are not in Gauteng this week, where are you?"

Joburg is heating up this week! The Thoroughbred Breeders Association Sales Complex in Germiston is abuzz with activity as buyers start coming through to view the draft for the 2012 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.

There is much planned during and after the National Sales and the TBA has included an added incentive to apply for a buyer's card in offering two lucky card holders a weekend away at the Royal Chundu Lodge on the Zambezi. Truth be told though, with the horses on offer, one hardly needs an incentive to be able to put a hand up!

Vuma Horsefeeds will be at the TBA Sales Complex in force to support all our breeders; led of course by founders of the feed and Champion Breeders of South Africa, Summerhill Stud, who have a draft of 31 yearlings who have had only the best foundation in Vuma.

Champion's Day, Saturday at Turffontein, will be a cracker of a race day as the Highveld Autumn season comes to an end with a bang! Nine of the ten races on the card are graded races, so we should be in for a great day's racing covering all ages and all distances.

As always, Vuma will be there when it matters most - we love to feed your champions!

(Photo : JC Photos / Summerhill Stud)

www.seantarryracing.co.za

It was a super day for trainer Sean Tarry at Turffontein on Saturday, with Extra Zero winning the Grade 3 Sycamore Sprint over 1160 metres. The Summerhill-bred filly by Way West ran on under a lovely ride by Tshwaro Appie to clinch the fillies sprint feature for the day. Another Tarry trained horse, Give Me Five, ran on for fourth place.

Another notable run was that of Jackodore in the Grade 2 Senor Santa Handicap, who ran on well for second with stable companion Polar Moon running into the fourth spot.

The yard had places in both the Listed Derby Trial and the Oaks Trial with the three-year-olds, Peregrine and Final Score both running on well at the end to claim fourth place in their respective races.

Sean rounded off the great day with his own Terra Marianna winning the final race of the day.

On Sunday, at Clairwood, Gold Onyx ran second in the Listed Easter Handicap.

Currently, Sean is second on the trainers log behind reigning champ, Mike de Kock. Congratulations to the yard and to all the connections, we love to feed your champions!

Monday at Clairwood, Vuma trainer Mark Dixon had 2 winners in Head Of The House and Krackerjack Ace, Congratulations to the Dixon team and all the connections.
