BASIL MARCUS HEADS FOR SINGAPORE

Popular trainer, client and friend of Vuma and Summerhill, Basil Marcus, is launching his training career in Singapore. He has just ended the Cape season with a string of wins; among them a treble, including the Cape Breeders Club Jamaica Handicap on Saturday 16 January, the same day that his Singapore-bound horses left Cape Town, and two on J&B Met day!

Basil started training in 2003 shortly after hanging up his boots, having ridden more than 3000 winners and having been seven-time champion jockey in Hong Kong. Basil has been training in Cape Town where he had more than 120 horses in his string and was consistently among the leading trainers. The yard will continue to operate with the remaining horses, while Basil is in Singapore.

His major training successes, include winning the G1 Cape Guineas and the G1 Cape Derby with Jay Peg, who went on to win the 2008 Singapore Airlines International Cup and the 2008 Dubai Duty Free, trained by Herman Brown. Basil also trained the Summerhill-bred Desert Links, winner of the G1 Canon Gold Cup in 2008. Desert Links will return to his care after finishing third in the Group 1 Singapore Gold Cup in November when prepared by David Hill.

Basil was granted his licence by the Singapore Turf Club in June 2009 and will be based in the new stable complex at Kranji racecourse. The first thirty two horses left Cape Town on 16 January and are settled in Singapore, in preparation for the upcoming season. The string includes Ready to Run graduate Trafalgar Legacy, by Rock of Gibraltar and we look forward to watching their success.

The Vuma team wishes Basil every success in his new chapter – We love to feed your Champions!

The South African Jockey Academy (SAJA) was established over 50 years ago and is situated at Summerveld in KwaZulu Natal. It is the only institution of its kind in Africa that trains and educates apprentice jockeys for the national and international horseracing industry. Champion jockeys that have trained at the Academy include Michael ‘Muis’ Roberts, Basil Marcus, Jeff Lloyd, Felix Coetzee, Mark Khan and Douglas Whyte to name but a few. Well known and highly acclaimed worldwide, this sports academy has an excellent reputation of producing top jockeys and boasts a rich history.

As part of their fund raising and promotions initiatives, the SAJA held a race day at Turffontein racecourse in August. Vuma was proud to be there supporting the education and training of our future champion jockeys.

Following their riding careers many of these stars, like Michael Roberts and Basil Marcus, go on to become great trainers and we are proud to continue our association with them by feeding the horses that they train.

Vuma – Proud supporters of our current and future champions!
