SANSUI SUMMER CUP DAY 2009

For some years now, Vuma-fed horses have dominated virtually every major meeting at the Spring and Autumn festivals on the Highveld, as well as the KZN winter season. Saturday was no exception, where the ones that mattered most were the Sansui Summer Cup (Gr.1), the Vodacom Dingaans (Gr.2) and the GommaGomma Fillies Mile (Gr.3). Vuma was there when it mattered most, the murderous last 400 metres of the Turffontein straight.

GommaGomma Fillies Mile (Gr.3)

1st Sidera for Mike de Kock
2nd Generous Anna for Charles Laird
4th Fisani for Mike de Kock

Vodacom Dingaans (Gr.2)

1st Curved Ball for Charles Laird
2nd Galileo’s Galaxy for Charles Laird
4th Fort Petersburg for Dominic Zaki

Sansui Summer Cup (Gr.1)

1st Aslan for Sean Tarry
3rd Meet At Malamala for Mike de Kock

Vuma salutes all the connections... we love to feed your Champions.

Our Giant - Our Hero

We are always thrilled when our Vuma-fed horses do well and we took special pride watching a gutsy little horse race past the rest of the field in the Mercury Sprint yesterday.

Just 15 days ago the Charles Laird-trained Our Giant was contesting the Vodacom Durban July over 2200m and yesterday, over a distance of 1200m, the classy five-year-old demolished the Gr1 Mercury Sprint field, taking victory by a convincing 4.25 lengths.

Tab Online reports that Our Giant, who was the best weighted runner in the field, sat a couple of lengths off pacemaker Fort Beluga on the inside. Once Anton Marcus asked the gelding for an effort, the 11-time winner just lengthened his stride to win in a canter. Sharks Bay, who had to battle for a way through, kept on to claim second spot, with Extinct another 1.75-lengths back in third.

“We always thought he was in with a shout,” said Anton Marcus after the race. “He was coming back from a 2200m so I didn’t want to pressurise him so I didn’t push him early.”

Anton Marcus revealed that he has always had a soft spot for the son of Giant’s Causeway. “I’m very excited. Winning with this horse is one of the highlights of my season. He’s very special to us. Everybody involved must take credit, especially the head groom.”

Prior to the Mercury Sprint, Charles Laird had said that Our Giant’s mission would probably be the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate over 1600m at Kenilworth in January, a race in which he finished second to Pocket Power earlier this year. “It is very difficult to find a race for him as he always keeps bumping into Pocket Power and he has shown he can’t beat Pocket Power who has beaten him three times. He’s won his only 1200m run and he’s a top horse. But he is going to have a long, long holiday and his mission after that will probably be the Queen’s Plate,’’ said Charles Laird.

Our Giant’s emphatic victory in the Gr1 Mercury Sprint has pushed his earnings past the R3.1-million mark and his race record reflects 12 wins and 12 places from 29 starts.

Once again when the call went out, Vuma was there! Congratulations to all the winning connections and to the second placed, Dennis Drier-trained Sharks Bay. We are proud to feed your Champions.
