Last Sunday saw the Emperors Palace Ready to Run Sale end on a very positive note with averages up from last year. This is very encouraging to the racing industry, considering the tough economic times that we are living in. However, as Summerhill Stud's Mick Goss says there will still be big races to be won and the pure passion that we all have for horses will keep us optimistic and positive!

Congratulations must go to the Gary Alexander Racing team and all the connections as the Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile was won by the Summerhill-bred Pierre Jourdan!

PJ, as he is affectionately known, is a real horse for the people; sold at the 2008 Emperors Ready to Run Sale for R60,000, Pierre Jourdan has now gone on to win R4,475,675 in stakes.

Pierre Jourdan even has his own Facebook Page!!... CLICK HERE.

Congratulations to all the Champions from the Feed of Champions!

The Emperors Palace Ready To Run Race and Sale take place on Saturday the 5th and Sunday the 6th of November respectively. The final field for the race was confirmed on Tuesday the 1st of November and the draw was done live on Tellytrack.

(Click here to view the Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup final field)

This is a very exciting week for the contenders and all their connections and the spectrum of horses which have qualified is varied and reaffirms the fact that the Ready to Run sale has a horse for everyone and all those who enter the sweepstake have a shot at the big race, regardless of the initial purchase price. From well-priced value horses around the R65,000 mark to R1Million plus horses, all have a chance of winning the R1million first prize. An extra bonus is that of the 16 contenders, the first ten will all walk away with a prize!

The action at the sales yard is hotting up with many visitors viewing the draft, to go under the hammer on Sunday from 2pm. There are a number of very nice horses among them and only time will tell who picks the next champion!

We love to feed your Champions!

The Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale
TBA Sales Complex, Gosforth Park, South Africa
6 November 2011

It was a great day out as the annual gallops for the Emperors Palace Ready to Run Sale took place last Friday at Summerhill Stud. 150 two year olds showed their paces to a fairly revered audience, made up of trainers, owners and horse enthusiasts.

The judging panel made up of stalwarts such as Mike de Kock, Michael Roberts, Graeme Hawkins and Dean Kannemeyer had a tough time selecting their best horses on the day but there were one or two definite favourites. What remains to be seen is who will have picked the best horse. Only Joey Ramsden had Horse of the Year, Igugu, in his list last year, so it certainly is no easy task.

From a Vuma perspective, we are always thrilled to see the Summerhill draft, fed and raised as they are on Vuma Vigour 15% and Vuma Upstart 14%. These strong foundations produce true champions and we love to follow their successes on the track!

Vodacom Durban July
2 July 2011

This past week has seen some incredible highs and some devastating lows. With the Galileo filly, Igugu, winning the Vodacom Durban July and highlighting her dominance of this past racing season, closely followed by Pierre Jourdan, it really puts a feather in the cap of Champion Breeders Summerhill Stud.

Igugu was imported from Australia as a yearling and Pierre Jourdan was born and bred on the farm but both were grown and prepped for the Emperors Palace Ready to Run Sale (albeit a year apart) on Vuma Horse Feed.

Summerhill Stud is the original home of Vuma and they will be the first to tell you that the formulation and feeding of Vuma Feeds was the turning point in their campaign to become the nation's leading breeder. Summerhill-bred horses are known to run more often and for for longer due to their exceptional foundations and superior nutrition.

Our congratulations to Summerhill and all the connections of the winning horses, particularly Sean Tarry and Messrs Nathan and Nestadt for Happy Archer's win in the Grade 1 Garden Province Stakes, as well as to Glen Kotzen and the owners of Princess Victoria for her win in the Grade 1 Golden Slipper.

Also, to the Kotzen team and the Deacons, our sincerest condolences on the loss of Big City Life; he was Big in every way and will be sorely missed.

Following July day, the Vuma team attended the Winter School at the Al Maktoum School of Management Excellence and were privileged to hear some leading lights speaking on various topics related to our Equine Industry - fascinating and inspiring!

Not ones to let the grass grow under our feet, we'll certainly be putting their ideas into practise, so watch this space!

"Practice Makes Perfect"

Friday 15th October sees the running of the Ready to Run Gallops at Summerhill Stud; a showcase of potential which enables buyers to select their top picks at the sale to be held on Sunday 7 November, in Germiston.

Highlighting the value of the Ready to Run sale were the weekend graded wins of Pierre Jourdan and the filly Igugu, both graduates in the past two years. The stats will also tell you that the graduates of the Summerhill pastures are hardy and run more often for more stakes, keeping Summerhill at the head of the pack on the breeder's log.

What gives them the edge you may ask? As the founder of Vuma Horse Feeds, Summerhill knows the value of a superior stud feed formulated to ensure correct growth and lay down strong bone from the very beginning, even while still in utero.

Vuma Vigour, together with Vuma Vitality, forms the backbone of the stud feed. Vuma Vigour has the correct balance of vitamins and minerals, with superior inclusions to ensure optimal absorption of nutrients, particularly Calcium, at all critical growth stages.

Nutrition is essential in maximizing bone density. Skeletal growth is rapid during the first 12 months and it is at this time that bone, cartilage and tendon are being deposited and strengthened. The benefits of good levels of vitamin A, vitamin E and biotin are irrefutable in stud rations, and there is evidence to suggest that vitamin C is important in the development of healthy collagen and is essential to the production of connective tissues (ligaments, tendons, cartilage).

Protein is never as important to the horse as it is at this time. A horse, at any stage, has no requirement for a "percentage" of protein, but rather a certain mass of protein per day. The precentage protein feed supplied should be calculated by the requirement in grams divided by the amount of feed to be supplied. Since the intake of young horses is low, it follows that the "percentage" protein of young stock feeds will be relatively high.

In addition, quality of protein is important, thus the amino acid profile of the feed is critical and the quality of the individual nutrients included in the feed is important.

Skeletal growth occurs faster that weight gain. At 6 months of age bone mineralization is 68% complete. Dietary mineral supplementation along with careful management and training programs will result in improved bone density and in turn, improved skeletal durability. Young horses will stay training longer without the problems that bone injuries can cause.

The Kentucky growth chart below is a useful guideline against which to measure growing foals.
