It's sizzling in the City!

Cape Town may be in temperate climes but the racing action this next week is really heating things up!

The CTS Cape Premier Yearling Sale starts off on Thursday the 26th of January through Friday the 27th with a very strong catalogue of very well bred and well-related yearlings on offer. There is a lot of depth across the 350 lot book and it is bound to attract a strong buying market. We expect to see some exceptional horses and some record-breaking prices!

Saturday the 28th of January brings the running of the J&B Met! As always, it is the place to be on the last Saturday of January. The field could be quite open except for the presence of sparkling jewel, Igugu! The champion filly has run second only twice in her career and it will be thrilling to see if she can once again hold off the boys, as she did in the Vodacom Durban July!

WHAT WOULD ONE GIVE FOR A CRYSTAL BALL?

Ready To Run Gallops at Summerhill Stud

The Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale
TBA Sales Complex, Gosforth Park, South Africa
6 November 2011

It was a great day out as the annual gallops for the Emperors Palace Ready to Run Sale took place last Friday at Summerhill Stud. 150 two year olds showed their paces to a fairly revered audience, made up of trainers, owners and horse enthusiasts.

The judging panel made up of stalwarts such as Mike de Kock, Michael Roberts, Graeme Hawkins and Dean Kannemeyer had a tough time selecting their best horses on the day but there were one or two definite favourites. What remains to be seen is who will have picked the best horse. Only Joey Ramsden had Horse of the Year, Igugu, in his list last year, so it certainly is no easy task.

From a Vuma perspective, we are always thrilled to see the Summerhill draft, fed and raised as they are on Vuma Vigour 15% and Vuma Upstart 14%. These strong foundations produce true champions and we love to follow their successes on the track!

THE EQUUS AWARDS 2011

Summerhill Stud - Equus Awards
Summerhill Stud receive the Champion Breeder Award

They've done it again!!!

Summerhill Stud heads to the Equus Awards podium for the 7th year on the trot!

The original home of Vuma Horse Feeds, Summerhill Stud, has achieved a first - they are the first South African stud farm to win seven consecutive Breeders Championships. The Summerhill team received their award last night, at the Equus Awards held at the Theatre of Marcellus at Emperors Palace!

It has certainly been a long, hard slog to get to this point but one of the factors that helped to shape their path to the Breeders Championship was the return to more natural methods in the raising of their horses.

From a nutrition perspective, the turning point came when they initiated the production of Vuma Horse Feeds, based on international research and a return to a more natural whole grain, muesli-type feed, with processed maize and a superior vitamin and mineral profile.

This enhanced nutrient density has played a major role in the correct growth and development of their foals. The foundations of healthy collagen and correct bone growth are irrefutable to the long term health and soundness of young horses.

This is clearly illustrated in the fact that Summerhill horses tend to run, on average, for longer and more often than others.

Vuma is proud to be part of this achievement and we salute team Summerhill - We love to feed your Champions!

Other notable Vuma, Equus Award winners were :

CHAMPION TWO YEAR OLD FILLY - Princess Victoria for the Glen Kotzen Stable and owner Georgina Jafee

CHAMPION STAYER - Aslan for the Sean Tarry Stable and owners Mrs Leisher and Anthony Jacobs

BREEDER AWARD for EXCEPTIONAL INTERNATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT - JJ The Jet Plane for the Lucky Houdalakis stable and all the connections.

Another feather in the Summerhill cap was that the award for CHAMPION THREE YEAR OLD FILLY, CHAMPION MIDDLE DISTANCE HORSE and HORSE OF THE YEAR went to Igugu. This phenomenal Galileo filly was bought in Australia by Summerhill and sold at the Emperors Palace Ready to Run Sale in November 2009!

Congratulations to all the winners - we salute you on your great achievements.

WHAT A VODACOM DURBAN JULY WEEK - WHAT A WINTER!

Happy Archer wins the Garden Provence Stakes

Vodacom Durban July
2 July 2011

This past week has seen some incredible highs and some devastating lows. With the Galileo filly, Igugu, winning the Vodacom Durban July and highlighting her dominance of this past racing season, closely followed by Pierre Jourdan, it really puts a feather in the cap of Champion Breeders Summerhill Stud.

Igugu was imported from Australia as a yearling and Pierre Jourdan was born and bred on the farm but both were grown and prepped for the Emperors Palace Ready to Run Sale (albeit a year apart) on Vuma Horse Feed.

Summerhill Stud is the original home of Vuma and they will be the first to tell you that the formulation and feeding of Vuma Feeds was the turning point in their campaign to become the nation's leading breeder. Summerhill-bred horses are known to run more often and for for longer due to their exceptional foundations and superior nutrition.

Our congratulations to Summerhill and all the connections of the winning horses, particularly Sean Tarry and Messrs Nathan and Nestadt for Happy Archer's win in the Grade 1 Garden Province Stakes, as well as to Glen Kotzen and the owners of Princess Victoria for her win in the Grade 1 Golden Slipper.

Also, to the Kotzen team and the Deacons, our sincerest condolences on the loss of Big City Life; he was Big in every way and will be sorely missed.

Following July day, the Vuma team attended the Winter School at the Al Maktoum School of Management Excellence and were privileged to hear some leading lights speaking on various topics related to our Equine Industry - fascinating and inspiring!

Not ones to let the grass grow under our feet, we'll certainly be putting their ideas into practise, so watch this space!

Vodacom Durban July (Grade 1)
Greyville, Turf, 2200m
2 July 2011

Right now, there is more than a chill in the air and winter's frosty fingers are gripping most parts of the country. Apart from being a fierce reminder that we are in the middle of our South African winter it also the harbinger of Africa's Biggest Horseracing event - the Vodacom Durban July!

Just three weeks away, this year's Right Royal Affair is set to once again, test the country's top horses against each other. Some of the main contenders for the big race include J&B Met winner Past Master, Triple Tiara winning filly, Igugu, as well as the Summerhill-bred Pierre Jordaan.

Bearing in mind that Igugu and Pierre Jordaan both grew up on the strong foundations of Vuma Feed, there will be more than a passing interest in their results.

With things hotting up for the big day, the KZN winter season has got off to a blistering start for some of our current Vuma customers. Trainer Sean Tarry has just saddled the winner of the Lonsdale Stirrup Cup, Vertical Takeoff, who also lines up in the July field while trainer Glen Kotzen who saddled Princess Victoria to win the Allan Robertson Championship, has entered 2009 July winner Big City Life in this year's main event.

At whatever level one participates, July day is set to be an epic event with the who's who lining up on the track and off.

For all our Vuma customers, they know that when it matters most, Vuma is always there and come the first Saturday in July, we will be there in every way - Will you?

Horses are our passion and we love to feed your Champions!
