"From Dead Heats to Final Touchdowns"

This past week has been somewhat turbulent as the Highveld Autumn season came to a close with Champions Day at Turffontein and the Emperors Palace Bloodstock SA National Yearling Sale.

The sale ended slightly lower than last year, although mostly positive (and certainly the figures are more realistic since the TBA has taken the bold step of excluding vendor buy-backs in the overall sales figures.)

However, around the sales complex not all vendors were equally happy and the sale was a tough one for many of the smaller breeders. Champion Breeders and Vuma founders, Summerhill Stud ended as the 5th leading vendor with their yearlings selling for an average price of R323,077.

Saturday's Champions Day provided many thrills and a few disappointments. Mary Slack's, Wilgerbosdrift Stud had a phenomenal day, winning 4 of the 9 graded races with some of their exceptional fillies. Apart from their breeding, the performance of all four horses, trained by Mike de Kock, makes them very exciting broodmare prospects for the stud, once their racing careers are over. They will certainly be ones to watch in the future!

The Grade 1 SA Derby proved a nail biter, with Sean Tarry and Chris van Niekerk's Pomodoro just getting up to dead-heat with Alec Laird's Royal Bencher. Pomodoro was also bred by Chris and he is living up to his name and proving himself to be a very golden apple!

Our favourite Champ, JJ The Jet Plane, ran in the Computaform Sprint, after winning it in 2008 and going on to travel the world and back, lighting up the tracks wherever he went. Seemingly, he has shown that at the age of 7, with a merit rating of 122 and earnings of over R12 million, that he has nothing left to prove and would prefer to expend his energy as he chooses. The owners have decided to retire him and he will be living in the rolling green hills of Mooi River with Marc and Nicola Coppez of Balmoral Stud.

To Hennie, Coenie, Thea, Lucky, Natalie and the whole T&L Racing Stables team, it is the end of an unbelievable ride. No Jet Plane ever built could provide the thrills and once in a lifetime experiences that JJ has.

He has been a true champion and the Vuma team salutes you all - we have loved playing a part in his career and he has made us all truly proud!

J J The Jet Plane - R12 Million in Worldwide Earnings

Vuma Champion, J J The Jet Plane touched down in Johannesburg last week from Dubai. He is currently in the quarantine facility for the next 5 weeks and we are delighted to have him back on South African soil!

With JJ in quarantine is the new addition to the Summerhill stallion ranks, Bankable, who is a very exciting stallion prospect, following his exceptional career of 8 wins for earnings of more than R22 million.

JJ is a true South African hero, and a real illustration of the exceptional thrills that can be experienced in horse racing.

His exploits here and abroad, in Hong Kong and Dubai, show that four friends with R70,000 to spend and some luck and perseverance can take on the world and win!

JJ was bought at the National Two-Year-Old Sale in 2006 and went on to win over R12 million in races across the globe, including the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint (Gr1), the Al Quoz Sprint (Gr2) on Dubai World Cup night as well as the local Computaform Sprint (Gr1), the Mercury Sprint (Gr1) (twice) and Golden Horse Casino Sprint (Gr1) (twice).

Unfortunately his suspensory ligament injury has meant that his international career has been cut short but luckily for us, he has returned home and we are thrilled to have him back in the Vuma fold.

Welcome home JJ!

"Fueled by VUMA"

Vuma champion JJ the Jet Plane will be returning to South Africa as soon as possible. In a letter received from Team JJ, Natalie Houdalakis writes :

"Dear All,

It is with a very heavy heart that we have to make the following announcement.

JJ has unfortunately suffered an injury at track work in Dubai, whilst preparing for the Krisflyer International Sprint in May. He has suffered a core lesion of his medial lower suspensory of his near fore leg. Although not life threatening or permanently career ending, it is however serious enough to put an end to his International Campaign.

The entire JJ team, Lucky and owners, Hennie Du Preez, Coenie Strydom and Thea Boyens are all devastated with the news and are still in a state of disbelief. However, as you all know, racing can be a very cruel game and one learns to take the lows along with the highs. And our Champ has given us more highs than most experience in a lifetime!

We have decided that in the best interest of JJ's welfare, he is to return home to SA as soon as possible, where we can hopefully nurture him back to full health once again.

We would like to take this opportunity in thanking each and every one of you for your continued support of this marvellous race horse. He not only belongs to us but to all South African Racing fans and along the way, he has managed to capture the hearts of many fans abroad too.

Our condolences to all the connections on such a massive disappointment. JJ has certainly brought us all a lot of excitement and great memories and has helped to fly the SA flag high on the International Racing stage.

The Vuma team looks forward to welcoming our Champion home!

"Start them right and you'll never look back!"

Our favourite Vuma Champion, J J the Jet Plane kept the South African flag flying at Meydan on Saturday when winning the Al Quoz Sprint on Dubai World Cup night - our very best wishes to Lucky Houdalakis and all the connections! This has truly been an amazing journey and we hope that someone is drafting a book!

River Jetez ran a creditable second in the Dubai Duty Free, ensuring that Jet Master stamps himself firmly at the head of South Africa's leading stallions.

The $10Million World Cup Race was a bittersweet 1st and 2nd for the Japanese, with these victories following so soon after the earthquake and tsunami that ravaged their home country.

All of this excitement took place less than 3 weeks ahead of the Emperors Palace National Yearling Sales, which start at 1pm on Friday 15th April.

Vuma founders and stalwart clients, Summerhill Stud, will be there with their draft of 40 yearlings, all of which have had their foundations on Vuma Horse Feed. Ask the 6 time champion breeders what helped them get to their current position on the breeders log and they won't hesitate to say that the fundamental changes that they made to their feeding regime is what made the difference.

Utilising international research, the feeds are formulated to provide a nutrient dense, highly palatable feed containing the best vitamins and minerals allowing for steady growth.

These foundations lay down strong collagen and bone giving the young horse a superior start and ensuring that they train on (in the case of Hear the Drums, for 34 wins).

So if you want to join the Champions, your best bet is to start off with Vuma Vitality and Vuma Vigour.

Once in training the highly digestible Vuma Upstart and Vuma Racer ensure high energy and a superior amino acid profile for repair and recovery.
