"GREAT EXPECTATIONS"

The title of a Classic book but the feeling that the Vuma and Summerhill teams have as the National Yearling Sales get underway.

The Summerhill draft of yearlings has settled in to the TBA complex at Germiston and are strutting their stuff as they get viewed by prospective buyers.

These  are proud and anxious moments for us knowing that they are on the brink of their racing careers and willing them to be successful in every way.

Apart from their impeccable handling and rearing, from a Vuma perspective we know that they have had the best foundations possible. The nutrient dense Vuma Vigour will have ensured that from conception to weaning they have received the best nutrients from their mothers and once weaned, they have had the best possible foundations for optimal growth and development.

The proof is in the pudding, as they say, and the Summerhill draft is exceptional.

It’s an exciting weekend ahead as the sales start at 6pm on Friday evening and then SA Derby Day takes centre stage on Saturday. Among the contenders for the main race are graduates of the Summerhill paddocks, sold at the Ready to Run sales, including Pierre Jourdan, Smanjemanje and Nyakatho and you can be assured that we will be there to see them lead the field home!

ERNIE ANDERSONS' SUMMERHILL AND VUMA STARS

A WALK DOWN ERNIE'S YARD

The best part of being involved in horse nutrition is seeing our clients succeed. From start to finish it is always a thrill to see horses doing well and looking their best.

It is also a privilege to go through a yard and get to know the horses. This is especially exciting in the racing yards when the horses started their lives at Summerhill and we know their history intimately.

Last week I went through the Turffontein yard of Ernie Anderson and as always, was inspired by just how hands-on he is as a trainer. From feeding all 50 horses to checking each one individually, as well as supervising all their work, he is personally involved with every aspect of his yard.

Ernie’s interest in racing started while he was still working as a quantity surveyor and he became an owner in 1976, back in the days when one still had to sit through an interview before being granted colours for a single horse.

He started training in 1987 and had his first winner in January 1988 with a little horse called Tangi. He was first based at Newmarket and then Germiston before moving to Turffontein when Gersmiston closed down.

Among his current stable stars are Valley of Rubies, and the Summerhill graduates, Ntabeni (Malhub x Hill of Plenty) and Nyakatho (Labeeb x Rose North)

Apart from his passion for racing, Ernie is an avid reader and collector of books and has a keen interest in mountain hiking, especially in the Drakensberg. He also breeds Red Angus Cattle and is building up a substantial registered breeding herd.

We will be watching in anticipation as Ntabeni makes her debut and as Nyakatho gets rolling in a few feature races this season. We love to feed your Champions!

Ready to Run towards the Summer Cup?

Well the dust has settled and the 2009 draft of Ready to Run horses have been sold and are on their way to their new lives. Some are heading back to Summerhill to take it easy for a while longer before they get down to the real business of racing.

The sale on 8 November exceeded expectations by achieving a growth of 9.5% overall and the top lots sold were 2 Galileo fillies sold for R2.1 Million and R1 Million respectively by Summerhill.

As the feed suppliers of the Summerhill draft, the Vuma team watched with pride as these young horses were put through their paces everyday, walked twice and taken out of their stables numerous times to be viewed by prospective buyers. In the sales ring they impressed, as the figures show, and we look forward to taking them into their racing careers.

These strong foundations are vital, so it is with great anticipation that we await Saturday’s Sansui Summer Cup day, especially with four graduates of last year’s sale competing in the Grade 2 Dingaans. Two Kahal colts, Havasha (trained by Mike de Kock) and Smanjemanje will be up against two Labeeb colts in the form of Khethani and Nyakatho.

The two sires will be up against each other again when the Mike de Kock trained Fisani (Kahal) meets Hypatia (Labeeb) in the Grade 3 Fillies Mile.

All in all Saturday will see the Vuma and Summerhill teams focused on racing at Turffontein.
