JULY 2012 AND EVERY REASON TO CELEBRATE

Golden Apple for Sean Tarry
to the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth!

It's the one that we all want to win! No matter the prize, the Vodacom Durban July holds all the prestige. And when it is your first, the victory is the sweetest.

For Sean Tarry and Chris van Niekerk, the Vodacom Durban July 2012 marks a milestone in both of their training and owning careers.

Vuma is thrilled to have been part of Pomodoro's July win and our congratulations go to Sean, Chris and the team for pulling this one out of the bag!

Some of the Vuma team were sadly not on hand to witness this great show and had to listen to the race from Calgary, Canada while at the centenary of the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, the Calgary Stampede.

Catherine Hartley travelled to Canada as part of the South African Women's Polo Team which took part in a ladies tournament and an SA vs Canada International match thereafter.

The SA team won their international match quite convincingly against the Calgary, Canadian team 6 -1!

The Calgary tournament coincides with the Calgary Stampede and this showcase of Western riding and lifestyle is nothing if not a spectacle.

Calgary, and the influx of visitors, is dressed in Wranglers, boots, Stetsons and big buckled belts for ten full days. The whole city embraces its Western heritage and all proceeds of this amazing event go back to charity.

From early morning breakfasts to late night stampede dinners, ending with fireworks every evening, the city and stampede organizers ensure that there is never a dull moment.

The highlight of the event is the Rodeo!

Apart from bull riding, steer wrestling and calf-roping, the Calgary Stampede Rodeo showcases some of the best horses and riders in the world! From bare-back bucking horses to barrel racers, roping and cutting horses, they are all amazing athletes. The calibre and variety of horse competing in the various events is truly awe-inspiring and the dedication and professionalism with which all the horses are trained and looked after is amazing to see. This is no back-yard operation; this IS the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth!

The polo team also had a wonderful opportunity to ride out in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains to see some of the two and three-year-old horses bred specifically for the rodeo. This was quite possibly the highlight of the trip and may convert a few polo players to cowboys/girls!

It was a truly memorable and inspiring week on both hemispheres and as they say at the Stampede: "Ya-Hoo for all our great horses!"

VUMA-POWERED POMODORO WINS VODACOM DURBAN JULY THRILLER

VODACOM DURBAN JULY (Grade 1)
Greyville, Turf, 2200m
7 July 2012

Trainer Sean Tarry saddled the winner of South Africa's most famous race on Saturday, when the Vuma-powered Pomodoro ran out a storming winner of the R3 million G1 Vodacom Durban July over 2200m at Greyville. It was a first win in the race for both Sean and leading owner, Chris van Niekerk.

The July victory was the cherry on the top of a magnificent season enjoyed by Sean and Chris, the latter having been one of the Tarry yard's most loyal and stalwart supporters. Saturday's victory was all the more poignant, with Pomodoro being one of three July runners for Chris. The victory was made so much sweeter by the fact, that Pomodoro was also bred by Chris.

Pomodoro also benefitted from a magnificent ride from former champion jockey, Piere "Striker" Strydom. Strydom was winning the July for the third time (he won previously on London News and Trademark), and he made full use of his experience and guile to win a race, in which many fancied contenders went missing.

Pomodoro himself is a horse who clearly thrives on a fight. Having gallantly gotten up previously to share the spoils in the G1 SA Derby with Royal Bencher, the colt showed similar reserves of courage to win South Africa's top race, when outfighting some tough older rivals.

Quickening up well when coming into the home straight, Pomodoro was headed by rank outside Smanjemanje in the final 100m, but fought back bravely to nab the eventual runner up by a short head.

In a tight finish, there was 2.75 lengths separating the first eight home - with Sean's other two July runners, Gold Onyx and Whiteline Fever, running seventh and eighth respectively.

Long well regarded by Sean, Pomodoro was found to be suffering from a shoulder problem following his run in the Daily News 2000. However, the colt thrived after the race, and was spot on coming into the July, but unfortunately drew widest of all, in barrier 20.

The second son of Jet Master to win the July, the three-year-old Pomodoro has secured himself in the lineup for Equus Honours next month. He has won four feature races this year, two of which were G1, and he was also desperately unlucky not to win a fifth - when narrowly touched off in the G1 SA Classic.

Pomodoro, now a six time winner, is also another feather in the cap of his dam Golden Apple - who was also trained by Sean!

Golden Apple, a daughter of champion broodmare sire Northern Guest, was a talented racemare, who won the G2 Gauteng Fillies Guineas. She has also duplicated this success at stud, with her seven registered foals to date having included six winners and four black type performers. Golden Apple's previous high-class performers include the G2 winner Golden Chariot, winner of the Astrapak 1900. Dead-heating seems to run in the family - as not only did Pomodoro dead heat in the SA Derby, but his half-brother, Golden Chariot, shared the spoils in the G2 Astrapak 1900 of 2011. Golden Apple has surely thrown her name into the hat for Equus Broodmare of the Year!

It is remarkable to think that Pomodoro began his career last August, and less than one year on, he has captured a Derby as well as South Africa's greatest and most beloved horserace.

Vuma congratulates owner Chris van Niekerk and the entire Sean Tarry Racing Team... we love to feed your champions.

IT'S VODACOM DURBAN JULY TIME!

Vodacom Durban July 2012

Vodacom Durban July
7 July 2012

"Winter Fever – it's contagious!"

With the Vodacom Duban July less than a week away, all eyes turn to Greyville in Durban.

The usual July fever has everyone abuzz and the gallops, while showcasing each horse, gave very little away in terms of who is certain to win on the day.

Vuma-bred stalwart Pierre Jourdan lines up for the Gary Alexander yard, in the main event again, after just being defeated by champion filly Igugu last year, while the Brett Crawford-trained three-year-old Dynasty colt, Jackson, looks to be most people's starting favourite. Of the fillies, the diminutive grey Ilha Bela and strong stayer Gorogonsa line up for the Mike de Kock / Mary Slack Trainer / Owner combination and, as we know, they are always a force to be reckoned with.

Vuma-powered trainer, Sean Tarry, has three runners in Pomodoro, Gold Onyx and Whiteline Fever, all good colts who should be strong contenders on the day.

2003 July winner, Dynasty has two other representatives in the race, apart from Jackson. These include the Colin Scott-trained Sage Throne and the filly Beach Beauty for Dennis Drier.

All 20 runners are great horses and of course the Vuma team does have certain favourites but we will be there to shout them all safely home on the day!

JET STREAM TURBULENCE

"From Dead Heats to Final Touchdowns"

This past week has been somewhat turbulent as the Highveld Autumn season came to a close with Champions Day at Turffontein and the Emperors Palace Bloodstock SA National Yearling Sale.

The sale ended slightly lower than last year, although mostly positive (and certainly the figures are more realistic since the TBA has taken the bold step of excluding vendor buy-backs in the overall sales figures.)

However, around the sales complex not all vendors were equally happy and the sale was a tough one for many of the smaller breeders. Champion Breeders and Vuma founders, Summerhill Stud ended as the 5th leading vendor with their yearlings selling for an average price of R323,077.

Saturday's Champions Day provided many thrills and a few disappointments. Mary Slack's, Wilgerbosdrift Stud had a phenomenal day, winning 4 of the 9 graded races with some of their exceptional fillies. Apart from their breeding, the performance of all four horses, trained by Mike de Kock, makes them very exciting broodmare prospects for the stud, once their racing careers are over. They will certainly be ones to watch in the future!

The Grade 1 SA Derby proved a nail biter, with Sean Tarry and Chris van Niekerk's Pomodoro just getting up to dead-heat with Alec Laird's Royal Bencher. Pomodoro was also bred by Chris and he is living up to his name and proving himself to be a very golden apple!

Our favourite Champ, JJ The Jet Plane, ran in the Computaform Sprint, after winning it in 2008 and going on to travel the world and back, lighting up the tracks wherever he went. Seemingly, he has shown that at the age of 7, with a merit rating of 122 and earnings of over R12 million, that he has nothing left to prove and would prefer to expend his energy as he chooses. The owners have decided to retire him and he will be living in the rolling green hills of Mooi River with Marc and Nicola Coppez of Balmoral Stud.

To Hennie, Coenie, Thea, Lucky, Natalie and the whole T&L Racing Stables team, it is the end of an unbelievable ride. No Jet Plane ever built could provide the thrills and once in a lifetime experiences that JJ has.

He has been a true champion and the Vuma team salutes you all - we have loved playing a part in his career and he has made us all truly proud!

POMODORO TOO QUICK IN TONY RUFFEL STAKES

Pomodoro wins the Tony Ruffel Stakes

A Golden Apple makes the Day!

Trainer Sean Tarry had a golden day on Saturday when Vuma-powered Pomodoro came home first in the Grade 3 Tony Ruffel Stakes. The three-year-old Jet Master colt out of the Northern Guest mare Golden Apple, bred and part-owned with Sean, by Chris van Niekerk, has now won four out of six starts. The colt placed in both his other races, one of which was the Grade 2 Dingaans on Sansui Summer Cup day in November 2011.

Sean also trains the fourth placed Heavy Metal, also owned by Chris van Niekerk.

Earlier in the day, the Vuma-powered Summerhill bred filly Extra Zero, by Way West, ran second in the Grade 3 Three Troikas Stakes for the yard and owners Messrs Blank, Bott, Nathan and Nestadt.

Our congratulations to the Sean Tarry yard and all the connections - we love to feed your champions!
