EMPERORS PALACE READY TO RUN SALE 2011

Last Sunday saw the Emperors Palace Ready to Run Sale end on a very positive note with averages up from last year. This is very encouraging to the racing industry, considering the tough economic times that we are living in. However, as Summerhill Stud's Mick Goss says there will still be big races to be won and the pure passion that we all have for horses will keep us optimistic and positive!

Congratulations must go to the Gary Alexander Racing team and all the connections as the Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile was won by the Summerhill-bred Pierre Jourdan!

PJ, as he is affectionately known, is a real horse for the people; sold at the 2008 Emperors Ready to Run Sale for R60,000, Pierre Jourdan has now gone on to win R4,475,675 in stakes.

Pierre Jourdan even has his own Facebook Page!!... CLICK HERE.

Congratulations to all the Champions from the Feed of Champions!

The Emperors Palace Ready To Run Race and Sale take place on Saturday the 5th and Sunday the 6th of November respectively. The final field for the race was confirmed on Tuesday the 1st of November and the draw was done live on Tellytrack.

(Click here to view the Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup final field)

This is a very exciting week for the contenders and all their connections and the spectrum of horses which have qualified is varied and reaffirms the fact that the Ready to Run sale has a horse for everyone and all those who enter the sweepstake have a shot at the big race, regardless of the initial purchase price. From well-priced value horses around the R65,000 mark to R1Million plus horses, all have a chance of winning the R1million first prize. An extra bonus is that of the 16 contenders, the first ten will all walk away with a prize!

The action at the sales yard is hotting up with many visitors viewing the draft, to go under the hammer on Sunday from 2pm. There are a number of very nice horses among them and only time will tell who picks the next champion!

We love to feed your Champions!

WHAT WOULD ONE GIVE FOR A CRYSTAL BALL?

The Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale
TBA Sales Complex, Gosforth Park, South Africa
6 November 2011

It was a great day out as the annual gallops for the Emperors Palace Ready to Run Sale took place last Friday at Summerhill Stud. 150 two year olds showed their paces to a fairly revered audience, made up of trainers, owners and horse enthusiasts.

The judging panel made up of stalwarts such as Mike de Kock, Michael Roberts, Graeme Hawkins and Dean Kannemeyer had a tough time selecting their best horses on the day but there were one or two definite favourites. What remains to be seen is who will have picked the best horse. Only Joey Ramsden had Horse of the Year, Igugu, in his list last year, so it certainly is no easy task.

From a Vuma perspective, we are always thrilled to see the Summerhill draft, fed and raised as they are on Vuma Vigour 15% and Vuma Upstart 14%. These strong foundations produce true champions and we love to follow their successes on the track!

SUMMERHILL NATIONAL SALES YEARLINGS EXCEPTIONAL

"GREAT EXPECTATIONS"

The title of a Classic book but the feeling that the Vuma and Summerhill teams have as the National Yearling Sales get underway.

The Summerhill draft of yearlings has settled in to the TBA complex at Germiston and are strutting their stuff as they get viewed by prospective buyers.

These  are proud and anxious moments for us knowing that they are on the brink of their racing careers and willing them to be successful in every way.

Apart from their impeccable handling and rearing, from a Vuma perspective we know that they have had the best foundations possible. The nutrient dense Vuma Vigour will have ensured that from conception to weaning they have received the best nutrients from their mothers and once weaned, they have had the best possible foundations for optimal growth and development.

The proof is in the pudding, as they say, and the Summerhill draft is exceptional.

It’s an exciting weekend ahead as the sales start at 6pm on Friday evening and then SA Derby Day takes centre stage on Saturday. Among the contenders for the main race are graduates of the Summerhill paddocks, sold at the Ready to Run sales, including Pierre Jourdan, Smanjemanje and Nyakatho and you can be assured that we will be there to see them lead the field home!

EMPERORS PALACE READY TO RUN SALE
8 NOVEMBER 2009

Summerhill Stud report that they are always flattered by the number of people who visit their website on a daily basis, never more so than in the weeks leading to the Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale. Interest is at an all time high, as people clamber for news of the Gallops. Gratifyingly, the posting of the live show on their website www.summerhill.co.za by Monday p.m., will provide all the answers.

Following is an extract from an article published on the Summerhill Blog :

"Another source of regular curiosity, is what happens to the horses in the immediate aftermath of the gallops. Being the highly bred animals they are, genetically attuned to running, their first instinct when they’re as well as they are and in the flower of youth, is to get out and run, but it’s our job right now to get them to Germiston in one piece for the sale. Mercifully, of the 110 Summerhill entries, only 6 had very minor muscle twitches, bumps or bruises by the following morning, something of a miracle considering the hot-blooded nature of thoroughbreds, and that this was the “acid test” years ago, we remember with some horror the number of horses suffering with sore shins, a phenomenon commonplace in training yards with two year olds.

More recently at Summerhill, with the implementation of our bio-friendly farming and nutritional practices, we’ve laid down the quality bone which comfortably accommodates the rigours of racing, and it’s as big a compliment as we can pay to this revolution, that there wasn’t a single one with “shins” on Saturday morning. While there are other contributing factors, including genetics and some of our husbandry practices, the biggest factors are the way we farm, and the benefits flowing from our dedicated use of Vuma as our nutritional foundation

For the fortnight after the gallops, the strings go out (about 16 at a time) for a long walk and an easy trot, and for the last time till they retire to stud one day, they’ll know the freedom of the paddocks. It’s some sight to see them when they’re let go with 30 acres in front of them in the mornings, fresh as they are right now, but it’s a touch nerve-wracking when they’re headlong in the direction of the boundary fence at 70km an hour, with few signs of letting up!

Once they get to the TBA’s magnificent Sales Complex at Germiston (for anyone who’s never been, it’s a world class facility, ranking with the best anywhere), they’re confined to two long walks, morning and afternoon, and they’ll be subjected to an entirely new routine. It’s bedlam in “Block A” once we get there, as there are droves of trainers, agents and owners passing through the complex every day, and there’s an entirely new discipline involved in standing to attention, and marching for inspection.

But they’re in the hands of some of the best professionals in the world, and it’s a joy to watch our young Zulus parading these horses; they have few equals in the realm of stockmanship."
